Thirteen suspected criminals remain at large in Zambia after an intoxicated detective released them from police custody on New Year’s Eve, sparking widespread alarm over public safety.
The incident occurred in the early hours of December 31, when the detective, reportedly inebriated, forcibly seized the keys to both male and female cells from a colleague. According to a police statement, the officer then unlocked the cells, telling the inmates they were “free to cross over into the New Year.”
Of the 15 suspects detained at the time, all but two fled. Many of the escapees face charges for serious offenses, including assault, theft, and burglary, raising concerns about the risk they pose to the public.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the escape on Friday, stating that efforts are underway to recapture the fugitives. “The suspects remain fugitives. Allowing them to remain at large may pose a significant risk to public safety,” Hamoonga said.
The officer responsible for the jailbreak fled the scene shortly after releasing the inmates. However, he was arrested later that day and is now in custody, awaiting charges for his actions.
The police have launched a manhunt for the escaped prisoners, with additional security measures being implemented to prevent further breaches. Authorities have also called on the public to report any sightings of the fugitives, warning that some of them may be dangerous.
The bizarre and troubling event has sparked public outcry, with many Zambians questioning the state of discipline and professionalism within the country’s police force. “How could such a lapse happen on a night when heightened security was expected?” one local resident asked.
The New Year’s Eve escape comes amid broader concerns about crime rates in Zambia, further amplifying the urgency to apprehend the escaped suspects. While the police work to regain control, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential consequences of negligence and misconduct in law enforcement.
