A series of tragic incidents occurred across different regions of Kenya in recent days, with several people losing their lives in violent attacks and suicide-related incidents.
On January 14, a 15-year-old girl was brutally murdered in Garissa County. The victim, who was a distant sister to the assailant, was stabbed to death in a toilet by someone known to her. Police said the assailant trailed the girl to the toilet before launching a fatal attack, stabbing her multiple times in the head and chest. Local residents, who had heard the girl’s screams, rushed to the scene and discovered her lifeless body lying in a pool of blood. Despite being rushed to Ijara Level Four Hospital, she was declared dead on arrival. The motive behind this murder is still unclear, and authorities are continuing their efforts to trace the assailant, who managed to escape the scene. A search of the area for the weapon used in the crime yielded no results.
In a separate incident in Migori County, a 49-year-old man, Daniel Moi Maki, was killed after a quarrel with an assailant who was known to him. The two reportedly had an altercation earlier in the day before the assailant followed the victim to his home in Ntaburo village, where the attack took place. Maki sustained deep cuts to his head and was rushed to Bugumbe Health Center before being referred to Akidiva Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The police are still investigating the murder, and efforts to locate the killer are ongoing.
In Kisii County, a 60-year-old man named Michael Ondieki Ogero was also murdered in his home in Omosasa village. Ogero was found with deep cuts on his head and right hand. The assailants, whose motive remains unknown, fled the scene after the attack. Police have launched an investigation and are working to apprehend the suspects.
Alongside these violent attacks, there were three reported cases of suicide. In Kamulu, Nairobi, an 18-year-old house girl, Dorcas Macharia, took her own life by hanging herself using a skipping rope. A suicide note was found at the scene. In Kawangware, another young woman, 23-year-old Roselyne Nekesa, also died by suicide. She was found by her boyfriend after he returned from work and discovered her hanging from a tablecloth tied to the rafters of their rented house. No suicide note was found in this case. Similarly, in Mbeere, Embu County, 43-year-old Boniface Nyaga hanged himself using a cable wire near his house, and no note was left behind.
The authorities are investigating the causes behind these tragedies, while post-mortem examinations will be conducted to determine the exact causes of death. As families mourn, these incidents highlight the continuing struggles with mental health and violence in different parts of the country.
