Representatives from 28 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), led by the Communist Party, have voiced strong opposition to President William Ruto’s perceived handshake with Azimio leader Raila Odinga. The NGOs argue that the critical issues affecting Kenyans cannot be resolved through political formations and engagements.
In a press conference addressing the current state of affairs, the organizations unanimously agreed to participate in upcoming anti-government protests. These protests aim to urge President Ruto to fulfill all demands made by the Kenyan youth.
Booker Amole, Secretary General of the Communist Party, emphasized their rejection of a broad-based government as envisioned by the president. “We have seen them putting off their interests to maintain the status quo. Raila and Ruto are the problem; we will not accept a broad-based government,” Amole stated.
Hapi Olal, a representative from the Social Justice Centre, also questioned the government’s inaction against rogue police officers who have used brute force on peaceful protesters. “Hakuna polisi hata mmoja amechukuliwa hatua na tumeona waandamanaji wamepigwa risasi na kwamba wanahabari wanashambuliwa (No police officer has been held accountable, and we have seen protesters shot and journalists attacked),” Olal remarked.
The NGOs’ stance reflects a growing sentiment among various segments of the Kenyan population who feel that political deals and power-sharing arrangements do not address the root causes of their grievances. The upcoming protests are expected to be a significant demonstration of public discontent with the current administration’s approach to governance and youth issues.
