Thika High School recently saw a significant boost in student welfare as 67 students were provided with medical eyeglasses through an initiative spearheaded by Pastor Dorcas Rigathi. The distribution event, held at the school’s hall, was a culmination of efforts to address vision challenges faced by students, following comprehensive eye tests conducted weeks earlier.
The eyeglasses were delivered as part of Pastor Dorcas Rigathi’s Boy Child Program, a community-oriented initiative focused on enhancing the well-being of students. Pastor Dorcas had promised this support during her visit to the school on May 25, 2024, where she was the chief guest at the school’s prize-giving day. Her commitment to improving students’ lives extended beyond academic excellence, emphasizing the importance of vision care in their overall development.
The event was more than just a distribution of eyeglasses. It featured a valuable talk on the dangers of addiction and the importance of career choices. Lewis Mutugi from the Kenya Counselling Psychological Association addressed the students, highlighting the urgent need to be vigilant against alcohol, drug, and substance abuse. Mutugi expressed his concern about the early onset of substance experimentation among youth, noting, “By the time a student is in Form Three, they have already experimented with one or two drugs.”
Mutugi’s warnings underscored the gravity of the issue and the importance of preventative measures in combating substance abuse. His remarks were a stark reminder of the challenges students face and the necessity for supportive programs that guide them away from destructive behaviors.
The school’s chaplain, Rev. Stephen Kabuba, echoed Mutugi’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of such preventive programs. “This is the generation that can bring change, and such programs that show them that their leaders and the society cares are good; not just condemning their actions without giving them direction,” said Rev. Kabuba. His words highlighted the significance of providing direction and support to the youth, rather than merely criticizing their actions.
The distribution of eyeglasses was a part of Pastor Dorcas Rigathi’s broader Preventive Program, which targets schools, colleges, TVETs, and universities. This initiative aims to advocate for a drug-free and alcohol-free lifestyle among students in their formative years. The program is designed to instill a sense of responsibility and self-care in students, preparing them to face future challenges with resilience and clarity.
The Chief Principal of Thika High School, Julius Muraya, expressed his gratitude for the donation. He acknowledged that the eyeglasses would significantly improve the students’ academic performance by addressing various sight challenges such as blurry vision, short-sightedness, and long-sightedness. “The donation of eyeglasses is not just a gesture of goodwill but a practical support that will enhance the students’ learning experience,” said Principal Muraya.
The impact of this initiative extends beyond the immediate benefits of improved vision. It represents a commitment to holistic student development, addressing both their physical and psychological needs. By integrating eye care with discussions on addiction and career progression, the program provides a well-rounded approach to student welfare.
Pastor Dorcas Rigathi’s efforts in fostering a supportive environment for students reflect a broader commitment to improving educational outcomes and personal well-being. As the students of Thika High School continue their academic journey with clearer vision and enhanced awareness, the initiative serves as a model for how targeted support can make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people.
