Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has highlighted the severe impact of climate change on the health sector, stating that it bears the most significant brunt of the crisis. “Health is the human face of the climate change crisis,” Muthoni emphasized, pointing out that the sector is currently at the height of climate impact. The increasing frequency and intensity of climate-related events such as heatwaves, floods, and droughts are exacerbating health issues, making it clear that addressing climate change is crucial for safeguarding public health.
Muthoni’s remarks underscore the urgent need for integrated policies that tackle both climate change and health challenges. As climate change continues to affect air quality, water supply, and food security, it disproportionately impacts vulnerable populations, leading to a rise in respiratory diseases, malnutrition, and waterborne illnesses. The PS called for immediate action and collaboration across sectors to mitigate these effects and protect the health and well-being of communities worldwide.
