Raila Odinga Defends His Decision to Collaborate with DP Gachagua Amid Political Differences

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has openly defended his decision to work closely with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, emphasizing the necessity of collaboration despite their divergent political affiliations. Odinga’s comments came during the presentation of the Limuru 3 resolutions at Chungwa House, where he addressed the underlying motivations behind his cooperation with Gachagua.

Odinga clarified that his burgeoning relationship with the Deputy President stems primarily from his pursuit of the African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson role. He noted that this quest had garnered governmental backing, making it essential to include Gachagua in the discussions.

“Gachagua is a member of this government, and as you know, the government pledged to support my bid for the AU, and I thank them,” Odinga stated. He further highlighted Gachagua’s evolving political stance, describing him as a “Saul who has now become a Paul,” suggesting a significant transformation in his political perspective.

The two leaders have found common ground on several key issues, most notably the advocacy for the One Man, One Vote, One Shilling initiative. This approach aims to ensure equitable distribution of resources across Kenya, a principle that Odinga has consistently supported.

“It’s logical for equity of resources. I already supported the proposal on the defunct BBI. We need equity, not equality. That’s why in BBI we talked about one man, one vote, and one shilling,” Odinga asserted. He called for constitutional amendments to solidify this principle and ensure a fair allocation of funds.

Odinga’s announcement regarding his collaboration with Gachagua coincides with the government’s recent commitment to supporting his candidacy for the AU Commission Chairperson position. On June 5, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, alongside Odinga in a joint press conference, praised the opposition leader’s extensive political experience and leadership qualities. Mudavadi affirmed the government’s full support for Odinga’s AU bid, reinforcing the nonpartisan nature of this international endeavor.

Odinga’s willingness to bridge political divides for the greater good of national and continental objectives underscores his pragmatic approach to leadership. As he seeks to secure a pivotal role within the AU, his ability to navigate Kenya’s complex political landscape and foster collaboration with key government figures will be instrumental in achieving his goals.
