David Rudisha: The Athletic Versatility Behind the 800m Legend

In an insightful interview with World Athletics, Rudisha shared that had he not excelled on the track, he would likely have found his calling on the volleyball court.

Growing up in Kenya, Rudisha showcased a remarkable range of athletic talents. He was a versatile decathlete during his high school years, a discipline demanding prowess across a spectrum of events including the shot put, pole vault, high jump, javelin, discus, and long jump, alongside four varied running races. This experience highlighted his adaptability and multifaceted skills in athletics.

“I was a decathlete in high school and would also participate in the high jump event,” Rudisha recounted. His ability in the high jump was particularly notable, illustrating his exceptional capability in both track and field events.

Beyond the confines of the track, Rudisha engaged in various sports, with volleyball standing out as a significant interest. “When we were young, we would explore almost everything. Other sports I used to play included volleyball. Yes, volleyball is one of the sports that Kenyans do very well,” he said.
