Police pursue link between murders of Rita Waeni and Asian trader

Police are actively investigating potential connections between the murders of Rita Waeni, a Jomo Kenyatta University student, and an unnamed Asian trader. The dismembered body of Waeni was found in Roysambu, Nairobi, after she went missing in January 2024. Suspects William Ovie Opia and JohnBull Asibor, both Nigerian nationals in Kenya unlawfully, were found with multiple mobile phones, SIM cards, and a hatchet, which linked them to the crime scene.

The investigation has revealed that the suspects communicated with Waeni through a pseudonymous Instagram account, indicating premeditated engagement. Additional arrests include the owner of the Airbnb where Waeni was murdered, for failing to record the identification details of the main suspect properly.

Experts have noted that short-stay accommodations like Airbnb are being exploited for criminal activities due to their lack of rigorous monitoring and CCTV coverage. This environment provides an opportunity for suspects to commit crimes with reduced risk of immediate detection.

Authorities are now expanding their investigation to determine if there are links between these suspects and other recent murders, including that of the Asian trader. The detailed forensic analysis and digital footprint tracking are key components in uncovering any potential connections between these cases.
