Westlands MP Hon. Tim Wanyonyi has officially declared his candidacy for the Nairobi ODM Chairperson position, marking a significant move in his political career. Speaking on Sunday during a church service at the Africa Inland Church in Sarangombe Ward, Kibra Constituency, Wanyonyi outlined his vision for revitalizing ODM leadership in Nairobi and preparing the party for the 2027 general elections.
“I want you to give me a chance to be the Nairobi ODM Chairperson,” said Wanyonyi to resounding applause from the congregation. He stressed the need for a renewed approach to party leadership, saying, “We want fresh air in ODM, fresh ideas. Let’s prepare ODM to take over the government in 2027.”
Championing Grassroots Democracy
Central to Wanyonyi’s campaign is a commitment to transparent and democratic elections within ODM. The MP criticized past harmonization processes that had caused discontent among party members and called for real elections from the grassroots level to the national leadership.
“As ODM members, we’ve told our party leader, Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, that this time we want real elections from the grassroots to the top,” he declared. Wanyonyi announced that polling station elections for ODM officials in Nairobi would take place on November 27, urging registered members to participate actively.
Lawrence Otieno Odhiambo, Sarangombe MCA, backed Wanyonyi’s sentiments. “In ODM, we want elections. Whoever fears elections does not want progress in the party. Hon. Tim Wanyonyi is our candidate for Nairobi governorship, and this time, no shortchanging,” Odhiambo emphasized.
A Second Shot at Nairobi’s Governorship
Beyond the ODM Chairmanship, Wanyonyi reaffirmed his intention to vie for the Nairobi governorship in 2027. Reflecting on the 2022 general elections, he addressed the compromise that saw him step down in favor of Polycarp Igathe as part of the Azimio coalition agreement. “Last time, I stepped down for Polycarp Igathe as part of the Azimio coalition agreement. But this time, it will be up to the people to decide, not boardroom decisions,” he affirmed.
The legislator underscored his readiness to take the race to the ballot in 2027, promising a leadership style centered on delivering services and fostering unity among Nairobi residents. “Me as Tim Wanyonyi, let us walk together so that I can be your next governor. I will give you the services you need,” he said.
Rejuvenating ODM for the Future
Wanyonyi’s candidacy for the Nairobi ODM Chair position reflects his broader ambition to reshape the party’s trajectory. He emphasized that ODM’s success in future political contests would hinge on the engagement of its members at all levels. His focus on democratic practices aims to address internal rifts and build a stronger, more cohesive party.
The announcement comes at a crucial time for ODM, which has faced criticism over internal disputes and dissatisfaction with its nomination processes. Wanyonyi’s push for fresh leadership signals an effort to reinvigorate the party as it seeks to maintain its influence in Nairobi and nationally.
A Leadership Vision Rooted in Service
As a seasoned lawmaker with a reputation for community engagement and effective representation, Wanyonyi’s bid for the ODM Chair position and governorship could resonate with party members and Nairobi residents. His campaign emphasizes service delivery, inclusivity, and grassroots democracy, aligning with the aspirations of a city grappling with complex challenges such as housing, transport, and economic development.
The upcoming Nairobi ODM elections will be a litmus test for Wanyonyi’s vision. His ability to secure the chairmanship and rally the party’s support will likely shape his 2027 gubernatorial bid. As ODM prepares for these elections, the party’s leadership dynamics in Nairobi could define its broader strategy for the next general election.
In seeking both the Nairobi ODM Chair position and the governorship, Wanyonyi presents himself as a leader determined to bridge past compromises with a bold new vision for the future. His message to ODM members and Nairobi residents is clear: the time for fresh ideas and decisive leadership has arrived.
