Sorrow has gripped Orongo village in Kisumu County following the tragic death of 23-year-old Edward Otieno Oyuru, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a violent confrontation over a wheelbarrow. The incident occurred over the weekend, and the suspected assailant, identified as Ford Rakwach, is now on the run as police intensify their search.
Kisumu East Sub-County Police Commander Edward Masivo confirmed the grim details, revealing that the deceased had gone to retrieve his wheelbarrow from Rakwach’s home. The wheelbarrow, reportedly left behind during a previous job where Edward had been contracted to assist in house construction, was intended for use in another task in the village. This action, however, allegedly enraged the suspect.
According to police, after Edward retrieved his wheelbarrow, Rakwach followed him to his home. A confrontation ensued, during which Rakwach reportedly attacked Edward with crude weapons, inflicting severe head injuries. Edward was rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.
Family members and villagers are in shock over the senseless killing. Edward was described as a hardworking and respectful young man. “He was focused on bettering his life. This is an unimaginable loss,” a relative lamented.
Authorities are actively pursuing the suspect, who fled the scene immediately after the attack. “We are working tirelessly to apprehend him and ensure justice is served,” Police Commander Masivo assured.
The brutal incident has reignited conversations about resolving disputes peacefully and avoiding escalation over minor disagreements. Community elders have urged residents to embrace dialogue and report disputes to local authorities instead of resorting to violence.
As the family mourns their tragic loss, villagers are left grappling with the reality of how a seemingly trivial matter escalated into a fatal confrontation. Police continue to call for calm as they seek the fugitive suspect. Meanwhile, Edward’s family is appealing for swift justice and closure during this difficult time.
