Investigations into the murder of Gilbert Kinyua at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) have taken a new turn as Members of Parliament urge authorities to question his former bedmate.
The National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Health, chaired by Endebess MP Robert Pukose, visited KNH on a fact-finding mission following Kinyua’s brutal killing inside Ward 7B on February 7. During the visit, the MPs learned that Kinyua’s former bedmate had a history of diabetes and convulsions. Despite being discharged, he remained at the hospital due to homelessness.
William Sigilai, representing KNH CEO Evanson N. Kamuri, told the MPs that the patient had been placed in a shelter through a partnership but was later returned to KNH due to disruptive behavior. His fingerprints have since been submitted to the National Registration Bureau.
Seme MP James Nyikal raised concerns about the patient’s mental state, suggesting that convulsions could cause episodes of unconscious behavior. “Convulsions are not always obvious seizures. Sometimes, they manifest as convulsive behavior, where a person acts without later recalling their actions,” he noted.
While the matter remains under investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the MPs called for swift justice and better security at KNH.
Addressing the press after their tour, Pukose expressed general satisfaction with the hospital’s measures but emphasized the need for internal security improvements.
“There is room for improvement, particularly on the internal front, to enhance security within the hospital,” he said.
With Kinyua’s killer still unidentified, MPs are urging investigative agencies to leave no stone unturned in solving the murder and preventing similar incidents in the future.
