Kenya and Hungary have strengthened their bilateral ties by signing two key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in education and agriculture, marking a new phase in their six-decade-long relationship.
The agreements aim to foster knowledge exchange, enhance agricultural productivity, and unlock new investment opportunities. Kenya expressed appreciation for Hungary’s contribution to education through the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme, which offers 200 scholarships annually to Kenyan students. These scholarships have had a significant impact on various sectors of Kenya’s economy.
On agriculture, Hungary has invested in a demonstration farm in Kenya, showcasing advanced farming techniques and innovation. The implementation of these initiatives is expected to attract more Foreign Direct Investment, particularly in agricultural value addition industries.
In a further commitment to strengthening ties, Kenya announced plans to open a diplomatic mission in Budapest. The decision has been approved by the President and the Cabinet, with the next step being budgetary allocation to facilitate the process.
Energy cooperation, particularly in nuclear power, is another key area of collaboration. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to implementing an MoU on Cooperation in Training and Education of Atomic Industry for the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy. This agreement was originally signed during Hungary’s high-level diplomatic visit to Kenya.
Beyond these agreements, Kenya and Hungary pledged to deepen cooperation in ICT, trade, and multilateral issues. Kenya is seeking Hungary’s support in pushing for global financing reforms to create a fairer and more inclusive international financial system.
Regarding trade, both countries committed to accelerating negotiations on the Agreement on Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investment. They also plan to initiate discussions on an Agreement on Avoidance of Double Taxation. To further solidify economic ties, the next Joint Trade and Economic Committee (JTEC) session is scheduled to take place before the end of the year, facilitating stronger business-to-business partnerships.
Hungary reaffirmed its commitment to Kenya as a strategic partner, emphasizing the importance of international stability. Both nations advocate for diplomacy and dialogue as the preferred means of resolving disputes.
