Rapper A$AP Rocky, real name Rakim Mayers, declined a plea deal in a Los Angeles court on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, in connection with an assault case involving a semiautomatic firearm. The 36-year-old artist pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault related to a November 2021 incident involving his former friend, A$AP Relli (Terell Ephron).
Prosecutors offered a deal including 180 days in county jail, three years of probation, a seven-year suspended sentence, 480 hours of community service, and mandatory anger management sessions. However, Rocky rejected the agreement, despite the potential for a maximum sentence of 24 years if convicted. Prosecutors indicated they would seek a minimum of 10 to 12 years in prison if the rapper is found guilty.
When asked if he understood the risks of going to trial, Rocky responded, “Yes, Your Honour, I’m well aware.” Judge Mark S. Arnold emphasized that Rocky’s celebrity status and relationship with Rihanna would not influence the court’s decision.
Rocky’s legal team argued he carried only a “prop gun” on the night of the incident and claimed Ephron fabricated the allegations to extort money. They plan to present testimonies from witnesses, including A$AP Twelvyy and a tour manager, to support their case.
Prosecutors criticized the defense’s last-minute disclosure of the “prop gun” claim, calling it an ambush. Deputy District Attorney John Lewin stated, “This is a brand-new defence that’s never been mentioned… This is their whole case.” The judge expressed concern over the timing of the revelation but allowed the witnesses to testify.
Rocky, known for hits like Multiply and Praise the Lord, has been in the spotlight not only for his music but also as the partner of Rihanna, with whom he shares two children. The case has drawn significant attention, with the trial likely to shape the rapper’s future both personally and professionally.
