The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) is driving the transformation of the agricultural sector in Abu Dhabi, focusing on sustainability and food security. Through a variety of initiatives and projects, ADAFSA aims to enhance agricultural production, improve food quality, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the sector. These efforts are essential to meeting the growing demands of the population while addressing the challenges posed by climate change and fluctuations in food prices.
ADAFSA is actively promoting the adoption of modern agricultural technologies that improve efficiency and sustainability in both plant and livestock farming. The authority encourages farm owners to implement advanced techniques that contribute to sustainable production, ultimately aiming to position Abu Dhabi as a global leader in food security. This strategy is aligned with the UAE’s broader commitment to sustainability, as demonstrated by the designation of a Year of Sustainability for the second consecutive year. The goal is to accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices across various sectors, including agriculture.
One of the key areas of focus for ADAFSA is the optimization of water usage in agriculture. Given the region’s arid climate, efficient water management is critical to preserving natural resources. ADAFSA has implemented several programs to reduce water consumption, including raising awareness among farmers about best practices for irrigation. As a result, water consumption in agriculture has decreased from 2 billion cubic meters in 2019 to 1.89 billion cubic meters in 2024. The authority’s communal irrigation services now provide water to over 6,500 farms across the emirate, using collective irrigation networks and stations. Additionally, ADAFSA has introduced non-conventional water sources, such as recycled and desalinated water, to help preserve groundwater reserves and enhance the sustainability of the agricultural sector.
In its efforts to develop a resilient and sustainable food system, ADAFSA has launched several strategic programs, including the Modern Agricultural Technologies Programme. This initiative encompasses projects such as the Advanced Agriculture Project, which focuses on climate-smart farming practices and sustainable development. The Palm and Dates Strategy, another important program, is designed to promote the growth of date palm cultivation, a key component of the local agricultural landscape.
ADAFSA has also introduced the Abu Dhabi Good Agricultural Practices (AD GAP) program, which certifies farms that adhere to global standards for agricultural practices. The program has successfully certified over 1,500 farms, helping to improve product quality, reduce waste, and increase the competitiveness of local agricultural products. The adoption of these best practices contributes to the overall sustainability of the sector, ensuring that farming operations are both environmentally and economically viable.
To further support sustainability, ADAFSA launched the Food Loss and Waste Reduction Strategy in 2023. This initiative aims to reduce food waste across the entire food production and consumption chain, from farm to fork. The strategy includes an awareness campaign under the theme “Together Blessings Last,” which encourages responsible consumption and waste reduction. In addition to public awareness campaigns, ADAFSA offers training programs for workers in agricultural establishments to help them implement best practices for reducing food loss and waste.
The authority also provides extensive training and guidance to farmers, offering courses on water conservation and sustainable agricultural practices. In 2023, ADAFSA delivered 736 training courses to over 18,500 participants. The Agricultural Guidance app, launched by the authority, provides farmers with information on irrigation systems, crop-specific water needs, and best practices for different types of agriculture.
In the area of beekeeping, ADAFSA has successfully developed the ninth generation of the Emirati honeybee breed, which is vital for honey production in the region. The authority has distributed thousands of queen bees to local beekeepers and is collaborating with UAE University on a project to monitor and manage pests and diseases that affect honeybee colonies. This research aims to ensure the production of high-quality, residue-free honey.
In the livestock sector, ADAFSA provides veterinary services, technical advice, and training to support sustainable practices in animal husbandry. The authority offers guidance on animal care, nutrition, and breeding techniques, helping livestock breeders improve productivity while maintaining animal welfare. ADAFSA also conducts annual immunization campaigns to protect livestock from epidemic diseases, ensuring the health and safety of the sector.
ADAFSA is committed to ensuring food safety across the emirate. The authority has enhanced inspection and control procedures, including the implementation of smart inspection systems and the use of drones for farm monitoring. The Jahaziya platform, developed by ADAFSA, provides early warning systems for food safety risks, while the Zadna Rating program allows the public to assess food safety standards in local establishments..
