In the heart of Katheini village, Machakos County, as the first rays of sunlight peek over the horizon, Margaret is already hard at work. While many in the village are still asleep, she is outside unlocking her chicken coop, beginning another day in the demanding world of poultry farming.
For Margaret, chicken farming is more than just a job it is her livelihood and her hope. “These chickens are my business and my future,” she says. However, the journey is not as simple as many people assume.
According to Margaret, one of the biggest challenges in poultry farming is money. The cost of chicken feed fluctuates frequently, sometimes rising when she least expects it. “One sack of feed costs more than my weekly shopping,” she notes. She recalls a time when feed prices suddenly spiked, leaving her in shock at the store. “I had no choice but to buy the food,” she says, highlighting the financial unpredictability of her trade.
Despite the challenges, Margaret has learned to manage her resources wisely. She carefully budgets to ensure she can provide the right feed for chickens at different growth stages. “A one-week-old chick cannot eat the same food as a one-month-old chick. Each age needs special nutrition,” she explains.
Beyond finances, keeping her chickens healthy and safe is another uphill battle. Margaret ensures their coop is clean to prevent diseases and provides fresh water daily. Predators are also a constant threat. “One night, I heard noises outside and found a dog had broken into the chicken house. It took some chicks, and I was heartbroken. But I took measures to ensure it never happens again,” she says.
Even with the hardships, Margaret remains determined. “It’s not just about making money. It’s about learning, growing, and never giving up,” she says with a smile. Seeing satisfied customers buying her healthy chickens fills her with pride.
Looking ahead, Margaret dreams of expanding her poultry business and mentoring the youth. “One day, I hope to create opportunities for young people through chicken farming,” she says. For now, she continues her hustle, proving that perseverance and passion can turn struggles into success.
