Farmers involved in cereal production across Tanzania are expecting higher crop yields, improved soil fertility, and reduced planting costs thanks to new technologies introduced by local agricultural companies.

New agricultural technologies have already begun to make a significant difference in Tanzanian farming. Two key innovations have been introduced: a precision planting machine and advanced liquid fertilizers. The precision planting machine is designed for farmers working on stubble fields, assisting with tilling, soil preparation, fertilization, and seeding in a single pass while promoting conservation agriculture practices.
To date, over 1,700 farmers from various regions, including Mbeya, Arusha, Manyara, Songea, and Morogoro, have received training on how to use this technology. The training has helped farmers cut production costs while performing four essential tasks simultaneously. Additionally, national agricultural institutions and government entities have received training to incorporate these modern farming techniques into their practices.
Efforts to support the adoption of these technologies include partnerships with academic institutions. A demonstration farm spanning 300 acres has been established in the Chalinze District, Coast Region, allowing farmers to see the precision planting machine in action. This initiative aims to serve as a learning hub, attracting farmers from Tanzania and across Africa, particularly those in the cereal farming sector.
Currently, 200 acres of land at the demonstration farm have been planted with sesame, with farmers expecting to harvest 600 kg per acre during the season. The precision planting machine operates by cultivating narrow strips of soil, applying fertilizers at the correct depth, and placing seeds in an optimal position to ensure germination and healthy growth.
The introduction of advanced fertilizers has further enhanced agricultural output. To date, 11 different liquid fertilizers have been registered, with nine already available on the market. These fertilizers are formulated to improve soil fertility, boost plant health, and maximize crop yields.
Farmers who have adopted these technologies are now seeking larger plots of land to expand their farming operations. The impact of these innovations is being felt in multiple regions, with many farmers eager to implement modern solutions to improve productivity.
