AirAsia X (AAX) has unveiled plans to introduce direct flights connecting Nairobi, Kenya, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, starting from November 15, 2024. This route marks a significant milestone as AAX becomes Malaysia’s first low-cost carrier to offer direct connectivity to Nairobi.
The decision to expand into East Africa follows AirAsia’s recent accolades as the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline and Best Low-Cost Airline in Asia for 15 consecutive years at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2024. The new route will not only provide direct flights but also include a convenient Fly-Thru connection, linking Kenya to over 130 destinations across Southeast Asia, Northern Asia, Central Asia, and Australia.
Kenyan travelers will benefit from visa-free travel to Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore, with visa-on-arrival options available for Indonesia, enhancing travel convenience and accessibility for passengers.
Ekitela Moru, the High Commissioner-Designate of Kenya to Malaysia, has expressed enthusiasm for the route’s potential to boost trade, investment, and tourism between the two nations. Meanwhile, Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A, and Benyamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X, underscored the route’s strategic importance in promoting affordable travel and global connectivity. They anticipate an annual passenger load exceeding 156,000 travelers on this new route.
To celebrate the launch, AirAsia X is offering promotional fares starting from Ksh.18,899 (USD 135) for economy seats and Ksh.69,699 (USD 499) for premium flatbeds. Bookings can be made through the AirAsia MOVE app until July 14, 2024, for travel between November 15, 2024, and October 8, 2025.
This new air route is expected to unlock diverse travel opportunities, facilitating cultural exchanges and economic ties between Kenya and Malaysia while enhancing regional connectivity across Asia and the Pacific.
