Amos Kipruto has shared a deeply personal moment in his career when he nearly walked away from athletics due to a series of injuries that left him struggling to perform at his best. The former London Marathon champion reflected on the difficult period following his victory in the 2022 London Marathon, where he faced a sharp decline in form. Injuries plagued his progress, and by 2023, he was forced to withdraw from the London Marathon after failing to finish the race. He also participated in the Berlin Marathon that same year but only managed a distant seventh place while Eliud Kipchoge triumphed.
Despite these setbacks, Kipruto found a way to push through the adversity, thanks to the support of his coach, who provided much-needed mentorship and hope. “I was almost traumatized by the injuries, you know the main monster in athletics is injuries, and it gives one a lot of questions, you might even think about quitting. I thank my coach because he was really a great mentor and gave me a lot of hope,” Kipruto shared in an interview.
In 2024, Kipruto made a remarkable comeback, securing third place at the Chicago Marathon, reigniting his confidence and belief in his abilities. He expressed deep gratitude to the Chicago Marathon organizers for the opportunity to compete, acknowledging that he had to work harder than ever to secure his spot on the podium.
Looking ahead, Kipruto is focused on the upcoming season and is determined to return to the global stage. He has expressed a strong desire to compete in the World Championships in Tokyo and is eager to participate in any major marathon event that will give him the chance to showcase his talents. “I’m ready for any opportunity that comes my way… if the World Championships will be there, I’m ready. If any major marathon will allow me to enter a race, I’m also ready,” he said.
Kipruto’s journey has not been without its challenges, but his resilience and determination have helped him bounce back from difficult moments. He understands the significance of wearing the Kenyan jersey on the global stage, having represented his country in both the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and the 2019 World Championships in Doha. Although his Olympic experience was disappointing, as he did not finish the race, he found success at the World Championships, where he claimed a bronze medal.
Now, Kipruto is focused on the future, ready to seize every opportunity that comes his way in his pursuit of excellence in long-distance running.
