Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou recently addressed the growing speculation surrounding Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel and his potential move to North London. The young French forward has been linked with a transfer away from the Bundesliga leaders, and Spurs are reportedly among the clubs keen on securing his services.
Tel, who enjoyed a strong campaign under former Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel last season, registered seven goals and five assists. However, since Tuchel’s departure and Vincent Kompany’s appointment as manager, Tel’s role within the squad has diminished. He has struggled for game time this season and is yet to score a goal, which has led him to reconsider his future at Bayern.
The speculation surrounding Tel’s departure intensified following his appearance in Bayern’s Champions League victory over Slovan Bratislava, where he seemed to bid farewell to the fans at the final whistle. Shortly after, Bayern confirmed that the 19-year-old was looking for a move away from the club.
Amid this situation, reports emerged that Tottenham had entered discussions with Bayern over a potential deal for the winger. The timing of the news coincided with Spurs’ Europa League fixture against IF Elfsborg, which ended in a 3-0 victory for Postecoglou’s side. When asked about the club’s involvement in negotiations for Tel, the Spurs manager remained tight-lipped.
“I can’t tell you anything about Tel,” Postecoglou stated in his post-match press conference. “I’ve been focusing on getting the team prepared tonight. Other people are working in the background. As I’ve said all along, I’m allowing them to get on with it, and when, and if, there’s any news, I’m sure I’ll find out.”
Despite Postecoglou’s reluctance to comment on the situation, the links between Tottenham and Tel continue to grow. The winger’s potential arrival could provide much-needed attacking reinforcements for Spurs, who have already strengthened their squad this transfer window with the acquisition of goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.
However, Postecoglou has also issued a subtle warning regarding the need for further signings. When questioned about whether Tottenham had more funds available to spend before the transfer deadline, the Australian manager responded cautiously. “I don’t ask those questions,” he said, hinting that the club’s hierarchy, led by chairman Daniel Levy, must decide on the financial aspects of the transfer strategy.
With the transfer deadline fast approaching, Tottenham’s pursuit of Tel could develop quickly. The young Frenchman’s pace, versatility, and attacking threat make him a valuable asset, and a move to North London could offer him the playing time he desires. At the same time, Bayern will be looking to negotiate favorable terms for their promising talent, knowing that multiple clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United, have also shown interest.
While it remains uncertain whether Tottenham will finalize a deal for Tel before the window closes, Postecoglou’s stance suggests that discussions are taking place behind the scenes. If Spurs manage to secure the signing, it could significantly bolster their attacking options as they continue to compete on multiple fronts this season.
