Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has clarified her political ambitions, emphasizing her commitment to completing her gubernatorial term and delivering on promises made to the people of Kirinyaga County. Speaking during a recent interview, Waiguru addressed speculation about her potential candidacy for Kenya’s presidency in 2027, stating that any decisions regarding her political future will be made closer to the end of 2026.
“I hear that question pretty often, and I will say that at this point in time, we have three years to elections, and my focus is to complete the work that I have started in Kirinyaga and to also work in supporting the government to ensure they deliver on the promises that we made when we were being elected,” Waiguru said.
Focus on Kirinyaga Development
Waiguru reiterated that her immediate priority is to serve the people of Kirinyaga County. Since her election, she has undertaken various development projects aimed at uplifting the region’s socio-economic status. From infrastructure improvements to enhancing healthcare services, her administration has been keen on ensuring tangible results.
The governor’s dedication to her current role reflects her approach to governance focused and pragmatic. “Towards the end of 2026, we will know what political direction we will take,” she explained, signaling her intention to make any political moves only after fulfilling her mandate as governor.
Speculation on National Leadership
Waiguru’s name has been floated as a potential candidate for national leadership, including as a possible Deputy President contender. While acknowledging the honor of being considered, she was quick to dismiss the notion of any current vacancy in the position.
“I am very honored that I was considered as a contender by Kenyans. I think it’s not something that you can take for granted. It is humbling to say. The call to service is a high calling that comes with great responsibilities,” Waiguru noted. However, she clarified that her focus remains on local governance and supporting the national government.
This is not the first time Waiguru’s name has been associated with high-profile political roles. During the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, she was tipped by some as a potential replacement. However, the position was ultimately filled by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, following his nomination by President William Ruto.
A Strategic Political Approach
Waiguru has consistently demonstrated a strategic approach to politics, opting to assess the political landscape before making significant moves. When asked about her potential candidacy in 2027, she emphasized the importance of timing and alignment with the broader political context.
“Right now, what I would say is that we have a deputy president in place, and there is no vacancy, so the issue of considering at this point in time doesn’t arise. However, in the future, we will see how the political scene plays out, where the country goes, where our regions go, and then we will determine the best way to proceed,” Waiguru explained.
A Rising Political Star
Anne Waiguru’s rise in Kenyan politics has been marked by resilience and ambition. As one of the few women governors in the country, she has carved a niche as a leader who balances local responsibilities with potential national influence. Her pragmatic approach and ability to navigate complex political environments have earned her a significant following.
While the 2027 elections remain several years away, Waiguru’s name will likely continue to feature prominently in Kenya’s political discourse. For now, she is keen to maintain her focus on Kirinyaga County and support the national government’s development agenda, leaving the question of her political future open-ended.
As the political landscape evolves, it remains to be seen what role Waiguru will play. However, her emphasis on completing her current term and serving her constituents underscores her commitment to public service. For Waiguru, the road to 2027 begins with Kirinyaga.
