Alego Usonga Member of Parliament Samuel Atandi has expressed confidence that President William Ruto’s second term is assured, provided he maintains his close relationship with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Speaking during a Sunday service in Dagoreti North, Nairobi County, Atandi stated that as long as Ruto continues to align with Odinga, he will secure his position beyond his first term.
“As long as you’re with God and you’re with Baba, you’ll never be a one-time president,” said Atandi, referring to Odinga affectionately as “Baba,” a common reference used by his supporters. This sentiment emphasizes the belief that the unity between Ruto and Odinga would solidify the President’s political standing and ensure his re-election in 2027.
Atandi dismissed criticism from political detractors who have questioned the viability of Ruto’s leadership and governance. The MP assured Ruto that his administration would enjoy widespread support as the country nears the 2027 General Election, noting that many Kenyans were rallying behind the government’s initiatives.
One of the key areas that Atandi expressed optimism about was the country’s economic recovery. With economic challenges being a significant focal point of Ruto’s leadership, the MP expressed belief in the ongoing transformation. “I know that our economy is jumpstarting, and this year we will see money flowing into the pockets of Kenyans,” Atandi noted, underscoring the importance of the President’s economic policies.
President Ruto’s partnership with Odinga gained national attention in July 2024, when the President invited the opposition leader to be part of his government by appointing several of Odinga’s allies to his Cabinet. This move was part of Ruto’s broader commitment to creating a broad-based government that seeks national unity. In return, Ruto has pledged to support Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson position, further cementing the collaborative efforts between the two leaders.
Despite differences in their past political contests, Ruto has reiterated his commitment to unity, stating that his government will welcome any like-minded individuals, regardless of their political backgrounds or regional affiliations. This approach is seen as an effort to bring together diverse political players for the greater good of the nation.
Atandi’s remarks underscore the growing bond between Ruto and Odinga and highlight the strategic importance of this political partnership in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
