Athletics Kenya (AK) has officially flagged off its Masters Team for the 25th World Masters Athletics Championships, set to take place from August 13 to 25 in Sweden. The event, a major highlight in the athletics calendar, will see a delegation of 25 athletes and eight officials representing Kenya on the global stage.
The flagging-off ceremony, held at Talanta Hela Plaza in Nairobi, was a moment of great anticipation and pride for the team. Stephen Olemarai, Chairman of the Masters Team Kenya, expressed a sense of readiness and optimism for the upcoming championship. “The team is ready for the competition and we are optimistic about performing well,” Olemarai stated. His confidence stems from the extensive preparations that the athletes have undergone, which he believes will translate into strong performances and potentially, medals for Kenya.
Olemarai’s sentiments were echoed by Paul Mutwii, Vice President of Athletics Kenya, who highlighted the significance of the Masters group within the athletics community. “The Masters group is a vital part of the AK fraternity. Their outstanding performances have helped establish Kenya’s reputation globally,” Mutwii remarked. He also emphasized that the Masters athletes are given the same opportunities as other athletes, underscoring the support and recognition they receive from the organization. Mutwii’s praise reflects the integral role the Masters athletes play in enhancing Kenya’s stature in international athletics.
The importance of the Masters athletes was further underscored by Evans Achoki, Senior Administrator at the Ministry of Sports, who spoke on behalf of Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen. Achoki conveyed the ministry’s appreciation for the team and their role in the sports ecosystem. “The state department and ministry have funded your participation because you are integral to our sports ecosystem. We want you to continue mentoring young athletes and investing wisely,” Achoki said. He also expressed hope that the team would secure numerous medals, thereby making Kenya proud.
The Masters Championships will feature a wide array of events across various age categories, showcasing the talents and endurance of athletes who continue to compete at a high level beyond their prime years. Kenya’s participation in this championship highlights the country’s dedication to fostering athletic talent across all age groups, from the young rising stars to seasoned competitors.
This year’s competition in Sweden is expected to be fierce, with athletes from around the world vying for top honors. However, the preparation and support that Kenya’s Masters team has received positions them well to make a significant impact. The athletes, known for their dedication and competitive spirit, will be carrying not just their personal aspirations but also the hopes of a nation proud of its athletic heritage.
As the team embarks on their journey, the collective encouragement from Athletics Kenya and the Ministry of Sports serves as a powerful motivator. The flagging-off ceremony was not only a ceremonial gesture but also a testament to the support and faith placed in these athletes. Their performance in Sweden will be keenly watched, with the nation eagerly anticipating their success on the global stage.
