Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has been re-elected for a fifth term as a titular member of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) governing body. This achievement underscores Atwoli’s significant influence and steadfast dedication to the labor movement both locally and internationally.
According to a statement released by COTU on Monday, Atwoli secured a commanding victory by garnering 97 out of 130 votes. The election took place during the ongoing 112th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC), reflecting the high esteem in which he is held by his peers.
Atwoli’s re-election marks a historic milestone as he becomes the longest-serving member of the ILO Governing Body. In his response to this achievement, Dr. Atwoli expressed his gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to the international labor movement.
“This historic re-election not only marks my continued commitment to the international labour movement but also establishes me as the longest-serving member of the ILO Governing Body, and I don’t take it for granted,” Atwoli remarked.
Over the next three years, Atwoli will continue to contribute to the ILO, leveraging his vast experience and expertise to influence labor policies and practices on a global scale. His extensive service record includes his roles as one of the Vice Presidents of the Global International Trade Union Confederation, Brussels (ITUC Brussels), and a General Council Member of the ITUC African Regional Organization (ITUC-A).
In addition to his ILO responsibilities, Atwoli has also held the position of President of the Organization of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) and previously served as the General Secretary of the Kenya Plantation and Agricultural Workers Union.
The re-election of Atwoli highlights the trust and confidence that workers in Kenya and beyond have in his leadership. “All these appointments reflect the trust that workers in Kenya, and beyond, have in me, in regards to contributing to the governance and strategic direction of key institutions in Kenya and beyond. It also speaks to the broad expertise and the years of experience that I have acquired while serving workers worldwide,” the statement issued by COTU read in part.
Atwoli’s enduring legacy as a unionist is well-cemented both locally and on the international stage. His re-election to the ILO Governing Body is a testament to his relentless advocacy for workers’ rights and his strategic vision for the labor movement. As he embarks on another term, the labor community anticipates further advancements and strengthened labor policies under his guidance.
