The African Union (AU) remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering democratic values across the continent, according to Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security. Speaking in Accra after the conclusion of the 2024 African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM), Adeoye emphasized that democracy is a continuous journey, extending beyond the election day.
“Our objective has been clear: the improvement and consolidation of democracy,” Adeoye said. While acknowledging that elections are never perfect, he highlighted the significant strides made in ensuring that democratic processes take root across Africa. The AU’s comprehensive approach has focused not only on election observation but also on building the capacity of election management bodies. Tailored training programs for electoral officials and observers have played a pivotal role in professionalizing electoral processes and ensuring adherence to international best practices.
A key message from Adeoye’s remarks was that “democracy does not end on election day.” Instead, it requires ongoing improvement of institutions and processes. The AU’s efforts have been integral in promoting stability, peace, and democracy, with collaboration between governments, civil society, and regional institutions being crucial to this progress.
Adeoye’s leadership in 2024 has been widely praised, particularly for moving beyond traditional election monitoring. His focus on preventive diplomacy and conflict mitigation strategies has helped stabilize electoral environments, especially in politically fragile states. The AU has also emphasized inclusivity in its electoral missions, ensuring balanced teams of youth, women, and experienced electoral experts, reinforcing the union’s commitment to representative governance.
Despite these achievements, Africa’s democratic landscape continues to face challenges, particularly with the threat of military coups undermining civilian governance. However, Adeoye remains optimistic, asserting that the AU’s progress in 2024 has laid a solid foundation for future democratic success and governance initiatives.
The latest countries to benefit from the AU’s democratic efforts include Ghana, Botswana, and Namibia, where elections were held last year.
