Ayra Starr: Being My Biggest Critic Propelled My Career Growth

Ayra Starr stands out not just for her vocal prowess but for her relentless pursuit of perfection. Born Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, the 22-year-old multi-award-winning artist has captured the hearts of many with her captivating voice and dynamic performances. Her journey to stardom, however, is not merely a tale of talent but one of self-critique and unwavering determination.

In her candid revelations during the “Dare to Dream” documentary by Amazon Music, Ayra Starr attributed much of her success to being her harshest critic. Despite her natural ability to sing and dance simultaneously without missing a beat, she emphasizes the importance of rigorous rehearsal and self-assessment. “I’m here today; I’m coping and I’m doing well, but I feel like being my biggest critic has been what has brought me here so far; that’s what has made me who I am right now,” Ayra Starr shared.

This mindset of continuous improvement has been a cornerstone of her career. After every performance, regardless of its success, Ayra would reflect on what could be improved. This relentless self-evaluation has fueled her growth and sharpened her skills. “Looking back at my first performance, I can laugh vs where I am right now. It is always like I can become way better. I always watch my old videos and I’m writing things I can do better and how I can sharpen my choreography. Definitely sharpen my choreography, a bigger stage production,” the Grammy nominee candidly narrated.

Ayra Starr’s commitment to excellence is evident in her meticulous preparation for her performances. She takes her rehearsals seriously, ensuring every detail is perfect. “I know I can sing and dance at the same time and that is easy for me but I make sure I have enough time to rehearse. I know what I want and I know certain things, like lights. I’m literally a stage producer at this point. I’ve studied it,” she explained. Her approach extends beyond her performance to include stage production, demonstrating her comprehensive understanding of what makes a show successful.

The singer’s dedication to self-improvement and her willingness to put pressure on herself have undeniably played a significant role in her rapid ascent in the music industry. “You just have to be strong and putting that pressure on myself has definitely brought me here, and I’m cool with that as long as I get what I want,” Ayra concluded.
