Baringo University College of Technology Proposed to Address Regional Education Needs

The Governor of Baringo County appointed a task force in October 2022 to explore the establishment of Baringo University College of Technology (BUCT). This initiative aims to enhance higher education opportunities in the region. The task force, led by Professor Chebutuk Rotich, has recently published a report recommending that BUCT be established at the Baringo Teachers College.

Extensive Evaluation of Potential Sites

The task force undertook a comprehensive evaluation of several institutions to identify the most suitable location for the new university college. The institutions assessed included the Kenya School of Government in Kabarnet, Chemeron Dryland Research Training & Ecotourism Center, Moi Baringo Teachers Training College, and Mogotio Vocational Training Institute. After thorough consideration, the Baringo Teachers College emerged as the preferred site.

Historical Significance and Current Utilization of Baringo Teachers College

The Baringo Teachers College, situated on a sprawling 57.9-acre campus in Seretunin, was established in 1911 as a public primary teachers’ college. Over the years, it expanded to offer Diploma programs in Primary Teacher Education and Early Childhood Teacher Education. However, the institution is currently underutilized, making it an ideal location for the proposed university college.

Alignment with National Educational Policies

The establishment of BUCT is aligned with the Universities Act 42 of 2012, which prioritizes the creation of higher education institutions in counties without universities. Baringo County’s lack of a university underscores the necessity of this initiative. The task force’s report emphasizes the need for BUCT to address the educational demands of the region, providing access to advanced technical and technological education.

Proposed Governance Structure

The report outlines a detailed governance structure for BUCT. The proposed governance framework includes a Governing Council, Senate from the Mentoring Institution (Moi University), College Academic Board, Standing Committees of College Academic Boards, and a College Management Board. This structure aims to ensure effective administration and academic oversight, facilitating the smooth operation of the university college.

Role of Moi University as the Mentoring Institution

Moi University has been suggested as the mentoring institution for BUCT. As a well-established university, Moi University is expected to provide the necessary support, guidance, and expertise to ensure the successful establishment and functioning of the new institution. The mentoring role will involve offering academic and administrative support, fostering the growth and development of BUCT.

Emphasis on Research and Innovation

The task force’s report highlights the importance of research and innovation in the new university college. It recommends that BUCT explore opportunities for partnerships and collaborations with local industries, research institutions, and other universities. Such collaborations are anticipated to enhance research activities and drive innovation, contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.

Conclusion

The proposed establishment of Baringo University College of Technology marks a significant step towards addressing the educational needs of Baringo County. The task force’s thorough evaluation and strategic recommendations lay a strong foundation for the development of the new institution. With the support of Moi University and the collaboration of local stakeholders, BUCT is poised to become a pivotal center for technical and technological education, fostering growth and development in the region.
