President Joe Biden will award the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 distinguished individuals this Saturday in a ceremony at the White House. Among the recipients are renowned Vogue editor Dame Anna Wintour, U2’s lead vocalist Bono, and billionaire philanthropist George Soros, all recognized for their outstanding contributions to society.
The White House emphasized that this year’s honorees are “good people who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world.”
Bono, born Paul David Hewson, is celebrated for his advocacy in poverty eradication and HIV/AIDS relief. Already a recipient of France’s highest cultural honor and an honorary knighthood, Bono’s global impact extends far beyond his music career.
Dame Anna Wintour, a fashion icon who has helmed Vogue since 1988, is recognized for her philanthropic efforts. She has raised over $20 million for AIDS research and supported UK arts organizations during critical funding shortages.
George Soros, a Hungarian-born financier and key Democratic Party donor, is being honored for his philanthropic initiatives and unwavering commitment to democratic values, despite being targeted by a mail bomber in 2018.
The ceremony will also celebrate cultural luminaries such as actors Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox, football legend Lionel Messi, basketball icon Magic Johnson, and fashion designer Ralph Lauren.
Notable posthumous awards will honor civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer, former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and former Defense Secretary Ash Carter.
Other recipients include humanitarian chef José Andrés, conservationist Jane Goodall, and science communicator Bill Nye. Andrés’ World Central Kitchen has provided crucial food aid in war zones and disaster-stricken areas, while Goodall’s conservation work continues to inspire environmental activism globally.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom, established by John F. Kennedy, remains the highest civilian honor in the United States, celebrating individuals who have made significant contributions to American society, culture, and humanity at large.
