Bp has entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with a consortium of prominent companies, including Masdar, Hassan Allam Utilities, and Infinity Power. This consortium aims to explore the potential for a large-scale green hydrogen (gH2) project in Egypt, marking a critical step forward in the country’s renewable energy ambitions.
Under the terms of the JDA, bp will serve as the main developer and operator of the project, leveraging its expertise and resources to drive the initiative forward. The consortium partners will consolidate their respective green hydrogen projects in Egypt, with the objective of developing a multi-phase project focused on the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives, primarily for export.
The newly established consortium has signed a Framework Agreement (FWA) with the Egyptian government, initiating a series of studies and activities to assess the technical and commercial viability of the project. This agreement was formalized during the Egypt-EU Investment Conference, underscoring the strategic importance of the project for both Egypt and the European Union.
The FWA was signed by key representatives from the involved parties, including Nader Zaki, bp’s Regional President for the Middle East and North Africa; Karim Hefzy, Chief Operating Officer of Hassan Allam Utilities; Andreas Bieringer, Director of Green Hydrogen Business Development and Commercial at Masdar; Karim Hefzy, COO of Hassan Allam Utilities; and Mohamed Mansour, Chairman of Infinity Power. The signing ceremony was witnessed by H.E. Dr. Moustafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt, Dr. Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Resources, and Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development.
The collaboration is poised to significantly bolster Egypt’s renewable energy landscape. Green hydrogen, produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources, is seen as a key component in the global transition to cleaner energy. This project aligns with Egypt’s national strategy to diversify its energy mix and reduce its carbon footprint, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
Nader Zaki of bp emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This partnership underscores our commitment to developing innovative energy solutions and contributing to Egypt’s renewable energy goals. We are excited to bring our expertise to this consortium and work towards a sustainable energy future.”
Karim Hefzy of Hassan Allam Utilities highlighted the collaborative spirit of the consortium, saying, “By combining our strengths and expertise, we are well-positioned to develop a world-class green hydrogen project that will benefit Egypt and beyond. This initiative represents a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability.”
With the signing of the FWA, the consortium will now focus on conducting detailed feasibility studies and technical assessments. These studies will provide critical insights into the project’s potential, including the optimal locations for production facilities, the infrastructure required, and the logistics of exporting green hydrogen and its derivatives.
The consortium’s efforts will be closely aligned with the Egyptian government’s renewable energy objectives, ensuring that the project supports national development goals while contributing to the global green energy landscape.
