George Natembeya, the Trans Nzoia Governor, has stirred significant debate in Western Kenya with his political approach, one that challenges long-standing norms and the entrenched political establishment. His confrontational stance, particularly in calling out the government over issues like abductions, has both rallied the masses and unsettled powerful political figures in the region, including Moses Wetangula and Musalia Mudavadi.
Despite being relatively new to the political scene, Natembeya’s boldness has gained attention. His Tawe Movement, seen as a defiant force against the status quo, aims to unite the Luhya community and shift the region’s political landscape. However, critics argue that his approach of undermining established leaders could hurt his aspirations. Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula, for instance, points out that Natembeya lacks political control, even in his own Trans Nzoia backyard, where Ford Kenya and UDA dominate.
Political analyst Daniel Orogo believes that Natembeya’s movement could reshape Western Kenya’s politics, capitalizing on the region’s social and economic grievances. Yet, others like Luanda MP Dickson Maungu caution that unity cannot come from tearing down influential leaders like Mudavadi and Wetang’ula. For Natembeya to succeed, they argue, he must find a way to collaborate with senior leaders.
While Natembeya’s courage in confronting issues is commendable, his ability to unite the diverse and historically fragmented Luhya community remains in question. Figures like Kijana Wamalwa and Masinde Muliro, who once led efforts to unite the region, demonstrated political maturity and strategic alliances. Natembeya’s confrontational approach may struggle against the deeply rooted reverence for political veterans in the region, particularly given Mudavadi and Wetang’ula’s roles in government.
As Natembeya continues to push for change, it remains to be seen if he can overcome the challenges that have hindered previous Luhya leaders in their quest for unity and political dominance. His journey is only beginning, and while his boldness is an asset, whether it will translate into lasting success is still uncertain.
