In a significant address, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops has appealed to the youth of Kenya, particularly Generation Z, to embrace dialogue and inclusivity amid ongoing societal challenges. The bishops emphasized the importance of open conversations and respect for differing perspectives, urging the youth to channel their energy into constructive dialogue rather than division.
“We request that you open up yourselves for inclusive conversations so that you are also enriched by perspectives that may not be obvious to you. In doing this you become attentive to the laws of God and bear true respect for others,” the Catholic Bishops stated at a press conference on Monday.
Acknowledging the role of Generation Z in sparking national and global conversations on democracy, leadership, and public values, the bishops commended the youth for their activism and highlighted the positive impact of their actions in highlighting social issues within the country.
“You have elicited a national even global conversation on what it means to be a democracy, the kind of leadership that should spur creativity and opportunities for citizens, the values and principles that define our public institutions. We thank you and continue to support you in aspiring for good in our society,” the bishops expressed.
While urging the youth to maintain a constructive approach and avoid divisive actions, the bishops also addressed the recent protests and called for restraint in language and conduct.
“We ask you to be cautious that you do not hurt others, which might turn against your great agenda for a better country. Be inclusive and supportive of constructive ideas and conversations,” they emphasized.
In a notable gesture, the Catholic Bishops commended President William Ruto for responding to the concerns raised by the youth protests. They specifically highlighted his decision not to sign the controversial Finance Bill and his subsequent move to dissolve the Cabinet as a positive step towards addressing public grievances.
“We commend President William Ruto, for finally listening to the cry of the people, which has been brought out sharply by the Gen Zee protests. Specifically, by declining to sign the controversial Finance Bill, and dissolving the Cabinet to give space for a more competent, dependable and leaner team that can deliver to Kenyans,” the bishops stated.
At the same time, the bishops called upon President Ruto to uphold transparency and integrity in the process of appointing new Cabinet Secretaries, emphasizing the need for broad consultations as stipulated by the Constitution.
“We ask the President to reconsider appointments in all other critical public appointments. The new appointments should inspire hope and a fresh start. Besides, they should reflect the face of Kenya as demanded in the Constitution,” they added.
Expressing concern over the recent rise in abductions and kidnappings across the country, the bishops condemned these acts as illegal and criminal, calling for accountability from those responsible.
“The horrible and graphic images of abductions we have witnessed in the past three weeks are disheartening. Those responsible for giving illegitimate orders must take personal responsibility,” they asserted.
In conclusion, the Catholic Bishops reiterated their commitment to promoting peace, justice, and unity in Kenya, urging all stakeholders to work together towards building a better society based on respect for human rights and the rule of law. They called for continued dialogue and collaboration among all Kenyans to address the challenges facing the nation effectively.
