The West End is alive with laughter and song as the vibrant musical Titanique brings a fresh twist to the tale of the ill-fated Titanic. Imagine if legendary singer Celine Dion had been aboard the doomed liner, survived, and decided to share her own version of the story that’s the whimsical premise of this unique production.
Blending Dion’s iconic music catalog with a playful interpretation of the 1997 blockbuster Titanic, Titanique offers a light-hearted departure from the usual sombre retellings of the 1912 disaster. Directed and co-written by Tye Blue, alongside Constantine Rousouli and Marla Mindelle, the show is described as “a joy machine,” brimming with humor, nostalgia, and heartfelt tributes.
The narrative unfolds through the eyes of a fictionalized Celine Dion, played by Lauren Drew, who channels the singer’s distinctive personality. “This is very much a love letter to Celine Dion,” Drew shared. “It celebrates her kookiness, her strength, and, of course, her immense talent.”
The musical pays homage to Dion’s greatest hits, including Titanic’s Oscar-winning ballad “My Heart Will Go On” and her powerful rendition of “All By Myself.” The production weaves these songs into a plotline inspired by the love story of Rose and Jack from the James Cameron film, with a sprinkling of pop culture references for added flair.
*Celine Dion’s team visited the New York premiere and unofficially gave their blessing, affirming the show’s charm and spirit. The production comes at a poignant time in Dion’s career, following her announcement of a rare neurological condition, stiff-person syndrome, which has impacted her live performances.
Playing at the Criterion Theatre until March 2025, Titanique has already won hearts in New York and is now expanding to Sydney, Toronto, and Montreal, with a French version set to premiere in April.
For fans of Celine Dion and lovers of inventive theatre, Titanique is a must-see, a delightful blend of music, comedy, and heartfelt tribute that ensures the spirit of the Titanic will go on.
