Sauti Sol, one of Kenya’s most iconic music bands, remains on an indefinite hiatus after 18 years of musical success. During this break, the band members are focusing on their solo careers, but occasional reunions for self-produced performances still keep the public’s attention. One such recent event was the third edition of Sol Fest, held at Uhuru Gardens on December 19 and 21, 2024, where the band performed alongside legendary rhumba groups Them Mushrooms and Les Wanyika.
However, with their hiatus still ongoing, booking Sauti Sol has become significantly more expensive. According to Willis Chimano, one of the band’s vocalists, the cost of securing the group for a performance has skyrocketed during this period. He shared that they would now expect a minimum of $100,000 (approximately Sh13 million) to perform. This figure is a substantial increase from the pre-hiatus fee of $40,000 (Sh5 million) for a one-hour performance, as reported by entertainment journalist John Muchiri.
Chimano explained that the increased costs stem from the logistics and overall expenses of running a band. Promoters must cover flights, accommodation, and the overall operation of the group, which adds up to a significant investment. “When promoters agree to pay, it’s because they see the value of the brand,” Chimano stated, emphasizing that Sauti Sol’s strong brand value now requires higher financial commitments. The band’s years of success and their reputation make them a highly sought-after act, and it’s clear that the cost reflects that.
Sauti Sol’s rise to prominence began with a significant turning point in 2013 when they earned their first million through Safaricom Twaweza Live. This campaign, which featured six concerts across Kenya, had a huge impact on the band’s career and marked their first major financial breakthrough. The partnership with Safaricom exposed the band to a wider audience and provided financial stability that helped shape their future success.
As the band continues its hiatus, their individual solo careers and the legacy of Sauti Sol ensure that their value remains high, making them one of the most expensive musical acts to book in Kenya today.
