Collins Sichenje, the 21-year-old Kenyan defender, has found a sense of stability and confidence after moving to Serbia last summer, marking a significant turn in his European football journey. Having previously bounced between clubs in Greece, Sweden, and Finland, Sichenje’s move to Serbian powerhouse FC Vojvodina Novi Sad has proven to be transformative.
In July 2024, after struggling to secure regular playing time at AIK in Sweden, Sichenje decided to seek a loan move. His agent secured a deal with Vojvodina, and he embraced the opportunity. The move has not only provided him with consistent playing time but also allowed him to rediscover his passion for the game. “After limited playing time in Sweden, I told my agent that a loan move would be a good option for me. Vojvodina called, and I accepted it,” Sichenje shared.
Since arriving in Serbia, Sichenje has felt an undeniable connection to both the club and the city of Novi Sad. He describes the environment as welcoming, with a supportive atmosphere that has allowed him to thrive. “I like this environment. I think that here in Novi Sad, if you are humble, everyone is ready to help you. The atmosphere within the club is like a family. Most importantly, Vojvodina appreciates what I do they have shown they believe in me,” he said.
The club’s belief in him was evident from the start. Sichenje’s standout performance against Ajax Amsterdam in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers, just weeks before his 21st birthday, solidified his place in the team. His impressive display showcased his potential and helped him earn a permanent contract with Vojvodina, signing a three-year deal that marked a fresh start in his career.
Sichenje’s journey to this point has been far from smooth. After debuting for Kenya’s Harambee Stars in 2021, he ventured to Europe with Greece’s PAOK. However, his time in Greece was cut short due to non-football-related issues, forcing him to return to Kenya. He then moved to AIK in Sweden, where he faced further challenges in securing regular playing time. A brief stint with KuPS in Finland followed before the opportunity with Vojvodina presented itself.
Despite these setbacks, Sichenje remained determined to succeed. He credits his father for being a constant source of support throughout his career. “When it comes to me and football, my father played a big role. From a young age, he followed every step of my path, and his presence motivated me a lot,” Sichenje said. His father’s encouragement and belief in his abilities have been key in helping him stay focused and motivated.
Interestingly, Sichenje also acknowledges the influence of a mentor from his early days in Kenya. Although their relationship has since soured due to Sichenje switching agencies, he is grateful for the guidance he received. “There is this one person in Kenya… We’re no longer on good terms now because I switched agencies, but I will forever be grateful to that guy because he trained me as if I were his own son,” he said.
For Sichenje, Vojvodina represents more than just another club. It is a place where he feels valued, supported, and motivated to succeed. The familial atmosphere and the club’s belief in his abilities have reignited his passion for the game. He feels that Vojvodina is the club where he can finally thrive and prove himself on the European stage. “Here, I feel like I belong,” he reflects.
As he continues to make his mark in Serbia, Sichenje’s journey is a testament to the resilience and determination required to succeed in European football. With the support of his family, mentors, and Vojvodina, he is poised to take his career to new heights.
