Conor McGregor is facing a civil lawsuit filed by a woman who alleges that he sexually assaulted her during the 2023 NBA Finals in Miami. The lawsuit, which was filed in January 2025, accuses McGregor of assaulting the woman in a bathroom at the Kaseya Center after Game 4 between the Miami Heat and the Denver Nuggets on June 9, 2023. The woman, a 49-year-old vice president from Wall Street, claims that McGregor, who had been visibly intoxicated, was served alcohol by arena staff despite his apparent state. She alleges that McGregor led her into a restroom stall, where she was sexually assaulted after an associate allegedly forced her to meet McGregor.
In addition to McGregor, the lawsuit also names the Miami Heat and Basketball Properties LLC, the company responsible for operating the Kaseya Center, as defendants. The woman accuses McGregor of battery and the Kaseya Center of gross negligence for failing to ensure a safe environment. The lawsuit seeks compensatory damages in excess of $75,000, along with medical expenses and other forms of relief.
The incident was initially reported to Miami police on June 11, 2023, but the Florida state attorney’s office declined to pursue criminal charges in October 2023. McGregor has vehemently denied the allegations, calling the lawsuit a “shakedown.” His attorney, Barbara Llanes, stated that the plaintiff’s story had changed multiple times over the course of nearly two years, and they were confident that the case would be dismissed. The UFC fighter’s legal team has maintained that the accusations are false.
The lawsuit also references a separate incident that occurred on the same night. During a halftime skit promoting a pain relief spray, McGregor punched the Miami Heat mascot, Burnie, which resulted in the mascot being hospitalized. Despite this altercation, arena staff allegedly continued to serve McGregor alcohol, which is a point of contention in the lawsuit. The plaintiff’s legal team argues that the arena’s failure to stop serving alcohol to an intoxicated individual contributed to the incident.
The plaintiff’s attorney, Jim Dunn, emphasized that the civil suit was the only remaining avenue for his client to seek justice after the state attorney’s office declined to pursue criminal charges. Dunn explained that his client’s primary goal in filing the lawsuit is to raise awareness about sexual assault and encourage other victims to come forward. He acknowledged that the legal action could have consequences for the plaintiff’s career but emphasized that her primary concern was to highlight the importance of reporting such incidents.
McGregor, who has been one of the UFC’s most prominent fighters, has not competed since suffering a serious leg injury in a 2021 fight against Dustin Poirier. In addition to the current lawsuit, McGregor was recently ordered to pay $264,000 in damages in a separate civil case in Ireland. His legal troubles have continued to mount, with this latest case drawing significant attention.
Neither the Miami Heat nor Basketball Properties LLC has issued a statement regarding the lawsuit. The case is ongoing, and it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will unfold. The outcome of the lawsuit could have significant implications for McGregor’s career and reputation, as well as for the broader issue of sexual assault awareness and accountability.
