The Crested Cranes, Uganda’s Senior Women’s National Football Team, are set to play two friendly matches against Algeria on November 27 and 30. These matches, taking place in Algeria, come just three weeks after the team’s back-to-back wins against DR Congo, where they showcased strong performances and teamwork.
In the October fixtures against DR Congo, the Crested Cranes achieved a 2-1 victory in the first game and a commanding 3-1 win in the second. The matches highlighted the team’s focus, determination, and fighting spirit. Fazilah Ikwaput was a standout player during the series, scoring three goals, including a brace in the second match. Teammates Sylvia Kabene and Viola Nambi also contributed to the scoreboard, with Kabene netting a goal in the first game and Nambi scoring in the second.
Building on this momentum, the Crested Cranes are preparing for their Algerian friendlies with a provisional squad of 33 players named by head coach Sheryl Botes. The players entered camp on November 21 and will travel to Algeria on November 24 after several days of intensive training.
The squad includes a mix of experienced players and emerging talent. The goalkeepers selected are Ruth Aturo, Daisy Nakaziro, Molly Naava Nabitaka, and Sharon Kaidu. The defensive line consists of Shadia Nankya, Bridget Nabisaalu, Phiona Nabulime, Maureen Kimono, Shakirah Nankwanga, Jolly Kobusinge, Angel Awuki Kigongo, Zabinah Namboozo, Zaina Nandede, and Hasifah Patricia Namboozo.
In the midfield, the team will rely on the skills of Joan Nabirye, Phiona Nabbumba, Yuster Kayesu, Shamirah Nalugya, Brenda Munyana, Doreen Nakayiwa, Violah Nambi, Peace Muduwa, Ronah Regina Nantege, Shamim Kilikumwino, Rinah Aruho, and Margret Kunihira. The forward line is spearheaded by Fazilah Ikwaput, Joanita Ainembabazi, Resty Nanziri, Sylvia Kabene, Agnes Nabukenya, Mastulah Atuhaire, and Sharon Namatovu.
These friendlies against Algeria are critical in preparing the team for upcoming tournaments, including the CECAFA Women’s Championship. With the Algerian fixtures being only the second set of international matches for the Crested Cranes this year, they present an opportunity for the players to gain more experience, improve their tactical cohesion, and assess their readiness for regional competition.
The team’s technical staff is confident that these matches will help identify strengths and areas for improvement. Head coach Sheryl Botes has emphasized the importance of maintaining the focus and intensity displayed in previous games. The coach also noted that the games would provide a platform for players to prove their readiness and compete for spots in future competitions.
The Crested Cranes’ recent performances have demonstrated the team’s potential on the international stage. Their ability to secure wins against a strong DR Congo side is a testament to their hard work and preparation. With players like Ikwaput leading the attack and a solid defensive core, the team has a balanced structure that can challenge opponents effectively.
As the Crested Cranes head to Algeria, they carry the hopes of continuing their winning streak and building on their recent successes. The team is determined to use these friendlies to solidify their strategies, strengthen their gameplay, and showcase the talent and dedication that defines Ugandan women’s football.
