Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Roads and Transport Kipchumba Murkomen celebrated Christmas with security officers stationed at various camps in the Kerio Valley region. The CS visited Kainuk, Ngaratuko, Tot, and Turkwel camps, where he commended the officers for their dedication and sacrifice in the ongoing mission to restore peace and stability in the region.
Recognizing Dedication and Sacrifice
During his visit, Murkomen acknowledged the unique challenges faced by security officers, especially during the festive season when most people spend time with their families.
“A majority of our security personnel are spending Christmas and the festive season away from their loved ones to keep our country safe and secure. It’s a sacrifice worth our praise,” he said.
Murkomen’s words resonated with the officers, many of whom have spent weeks or even months stationed in volatile areas to safeguard the communities.
Government Support and Encouragement
In addition to offering his gratitude, the CS assured the officers of the government’s unwavering support. He praised their patriotism and emphasized the administration’s commitment to ensuring they have the necessary resources to carry out their duties effectively.
“I applauded the officers for their patriotism and assured them of our full support as they work to bring lasting peace to the region,” he stated.
Murkomen’s visit and assurances highlighted the government’s recognition of the security personnel’s vital role in combating insecurity and fostering stability in the North Rift region.
Addressing Insecurity in Kerio Valley
Kerio Valley has long been plagued by cattle rustling and banditry, which have disrupted livelihoods and created an atmosphere of fear among residents. The region is among 14 counties that have borne the brunt of these criminal activities.
Last year, the government launched Operation Maliza Uhalifu, a comprehensive security operation targeting banditry and cattle rustling in the North Rift. This initiative has seen concerted efforts by the National Police Service and other security agencies to dismantle criminal networks and restore order.
The operation has been instrumental in reducing incidents of violence and reclaiming areas once dominated by bandits. Murkomen noted the progress achieved so far, attributing it to the dedication and professionalism of the security teams on the ground.
Positive Outcomes of Security Operations
Operation Maliza Uhalifu continues to yield tangible results, with several bandit hideouts neutralized, stolen livestock recovered, and key suspects apprehended. The increased presence of security forces in previously insecure areas has also allowed residents to resume their normal activities, including farming and herding.
Murkomen’s visit to the camps underscored the government’s commitment to not only maintaining security operations but also supporting the officers who risk their lives daily. By spending Christmas with them, he brought a personal touch to the government’s appreciation of their efforts, reminding them that their sacrifices are not in vain.
Hope for Lasting Peace
As the security operation progresses, there is renewed hope among the communities in Kerio Valley for lasting peace and stability. Government initiatives, combined with collaboration from local leaders and residents, are key to addressing the root causes of insecurity in the region.
CS Murkomen’s gesture during the festive season serves as a reminder of the critical role security officers play in safeguarding Kenya. His visit not only boosted the morale of the officers but also reinforced the government’s resolve to bring peace to Kerio Valley and other affected areas.
As 2024 unfolds, the continued success of Operation Maliza Uhalifu will remain a testament to the dedication of Kenya’s security forces and the government’s commitment to ensuring peace and security for all its citizens.
