Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano recently emphasized the critical role of universities as drivers of innovation and economic growth during Zetech University’s innovation week. Speaking at the event themed “Unleashing the transformative power of AI for a circular economy,” Miano highlighted the government’s dedication to nurturing a dynamic innovation ecosystem.
Miano described universities as pivotal “intellectual capital factories,” housing transformative ideas capable of tackling real-world challenges and advancing socio-economic development. She underscored significant government investments in research and development within academic institutions, aimed at enhancing facilities and fostering partnerships between academia and industry.
“Innovation is a catalyst for progress,” Miano asserted, stressing the importance of collaborative efforts between universities and industries. She noted that such partnerships are crucial for translating academic research into practical solutions that meet market demands and create new economic opportunities.
Addressing attendees at Zetech University’s Mang’u campus in Kiambu County, Miano outlined the government’s strategic focus on sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, media, digital disruptions, and the circular economy. These investments, she explained, aim to promote environmental sustainability, social equity, and overall economic growth.
“We are committed to enhancing the capacity of local industries to adopt and scale up innovations,” Miano affirmed, highlighting the government’s role in job creation and improving livelihoods through innovation and research. She emphasized that innovation and research are integral to the Kenya Kwanza government’s strategy for achieving self-reliance and bolstering local markets.
Miano praised Zetech University for its proactive stance in research and innovation, particularly its development of a rechargeable battery-powered motorbike in line with sustainability goals.
Professor Njenga Munene, Vice Chancellor of Zetech University, echoed Miano’s sentiments, emphasizing the transformative potential of AI. He described AI as a powerful tool capable of addressing critical global challenges, including resource management and economic inequality.
Professor Susan Alfano, Zetech’s Chancellor, stressed the importance of integrating green skills into education to ensure a sustainable future. “Green skills are essential for fostering environmental stewardship and economic prosperity,” Alfano noted, highlighting the university’s commitment to preparing students and researchers for a future that prioritizes sustainability.
In conclusion, the collaboration between government, universities, and industries is poised to drive Kenya’s future economic growth through innovation and research. By fostering a conducive environment for innovation and promoting sustainability, Kenya aims to build a prosperous and self-reliant economy.
