Energy Cabinet Secretary (CS) Opiyo Wandayi has urged his counterpart, Public Service CS Justin Muturi, to refrain from addressing national security matters publicly. Wandayi criticized Muturi for linking the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to alleged cases of abductions, including the reported abduction of Muturi’s son, Leslie Muturi, during last year’s Gen Z protests against the government.
Speaking during the launch of the Last Mile Connectivity project in Manyala Village, Suba South constituency, Homa Bay County, Wandayi emphasized that national security institutions like the NIS should be shielded from undue criticism. “Institutions that safeguard national security should be protected from attacks. Leaders should follow proper channels to address grievances,” he said.
Muturi recently claimed his son was abducted and later released after President William Ruto intervened with NIS Director General Noordin Haji. Wandayi expressed surprise at Muturi’s public remarks, urging government officials to use appropriate mechanisms to resolve personal issues. “Let’s keep off institutions that ensure our security. As leaders, our focus should be on serving Kenyans, not engaging in rhetoric,” Wandayi added.
He further highlighted the need for unity among leaders, particularly in the context of the broad-based government comprising both United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) members. “This government unites UDA and ODM parties. It’s time we stopped unnecessary talk and delivered on our promises to the people of Kenya,” he stated.
National Treasury CS John Mbadi, who was present, called on Wandayi to expedite electricity connections to underserved areas. “Many homes are still without power. Let us support President Ruto’s vision by ensuring equitable development across all regions,” Mbadi said.
Awendo MP Walter Owino echoed these sentiments, encouraging Nyanza residents to embrace development initiatives by the national government. As the ODM chairman for Migori County, Owino assured that the cooperation between UDA and ODM would not compromise the latter’s identity. “This collaboration should be seen as a way to achieve development. ODM retains its identity while working alongside UDA for the betterment of all Kenyans,” he said.
The event underscored the importance of focusing on service delivery and fostering unity among political leaders to ensure equitable development and progress across Kenya.
