Renowned lawyer Danstan Omari has announced his intention to vie for the Nairobi senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, positioning himself as a candidate with the experience and vision to steer the city’s legislative priorities.
Omari, known for representing diverse clients in cases ranging from civil rights protests to high-profile criminal trials, expressed his readiness to transition from legal practice to political leadership. Speaking in a video seen on Wednesday, the lawyer emphasized his capability to address Nairobi County’s unique challenges and opportunities.
“Nairobi needs a solid person to be the senator,” Omari stated, highlighting the political pattern established under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution. “In 2013, Evans Kidero was governor and Mike Sonko the senator. In 2017, Sonko became governor while Jonson Sakaja was the senator. In 2022, Sakaja became governor and Edwin Sifuna became the senator. By 2027, Sifuna will likely vie for the governorship, leaving the senatorial seat open, and I will be ready to take it.”
Omari’s vision for Nairobi centers on accountability, inclusivity, and ensuring proper utilization of public funds. He pledged to represent the interests of all city residents, from small-scale entrepreneurs to large corporations. “I have been in court defending hawkers, touts, boda boda operators, and business communities. Their voices are missing in the Senate. I want to bring that voice,” he added.
He described Nairobi as Africa’s gateway and home to the President, requiring leadership with focus, integrity, and a strong profile. “This city needs a leader who can ensure development funds are used effectively to benefit the people,” Omari emphasized.
Tracing his roots from Nyamira County, Omari shared his journey from humble beginnings to becoming an international figure in the legal arena. He stressed that his diverse experiences uniquely position him to champion Nairobi’s interests in the Senate.
Regarding his political alignment, Omari hinted at flexibility, stating, “Whether I stand as an independent candidate or on any party, I will sell my policies and positions as Danstan Omari.”
Omari’s declaration sets the stage for what promises to be a competitive race for Nairobi’s senatorial seat in 2027, reflecting the city’s evolving political dynamics and the increasing participation of professionals in governance.
