Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua recently hosted the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Vice Chairperson Wambui Nyutu for a meeting that revolved around leadership and mentorship. The session took place at Gachagua’s residence, where the two discussed the challenges and responsibilities that come with public service.
Taking to X, Gachagua described the visit as a significant moment of mentorship for Nyutu, who sought his guidance on navigating her leadership journey. He expressed his admiration for Nyutu, referring to her as “a daughter of the Mountain,” a phrase symbolic of her roots and the values she represents.
Leadership as a Calling
Gachagua emphasized the importance of public service as a selfless calling, underscoring the commitment required to serve the people effectively. “I have taken her through the rigours of leadership and guided her on the fact that public service is a calling and selfless,” Gachagua wrote.
The meeting served as an opportunity to share insights and experiences, especially on the nuances of servant leadership. Gachagua commended Nyutu for her passion, focus, and in-depth understanding of the challenges facing the people of Murang’a and Kenya at large.
“I’m especially impressed by her sense of purpose and her great desire to offer servant leadership to the great people of Murang’a,” he noted.
Nyutu’s Leadership Journey
Wambui Nyutu’s journey in leadership reflects a blend of academic excellence, professional growth, and a commitment to public service. Appointed as a commissioner at the NCIC in 2019, Nyutu has played a pivotal role in promoting national cohesion and addressing issues of ethnic discrimination in Kenya.
Before her tenure at the NCIC, she served as a Director at the National Irrigation Board of Kenya, where she contributed to strategic initiatives aimed at improving agricultural productivity through irrigation.
Her legal career is equally remarkable. Nyutu worked as a Legal Assistant at Kiragu Wathuta & Co Advocates in 2017 and as a Legal Secretary at Peman Consultants between 2016 and 2019. Her advocacy skills and understanding of legal frameworks have been instrumental in her roles in public service.
An Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Nyutu holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi. She also earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi.
Her leadership potential was evident early in her career, as she served as the Legal Secretary for the Kenya University Students Organisation in 2015. That same year, she was also a special delegate of the Students Organisation of Nairobi University, demonstrating her active engagement in student leadership.
In 2018, Nyutu’s contributions were nationally recognized when former President Uhuru Kenyatta awarded her the Order of Grand Warrior (OGW), an honor that highlighted her dedication to service.
A Future of Servant Leadership
Gachagua’s mentorship is likely to reinforce Nyutu’s commitment to leadership that prioritizes service over personal gain. By sharing his experiences and the lessons he has learned, the former Deputy President provided Nyutu with a framework for navigating the complexities of public office.
For Nyutu, this meeting marks another milestone in her leadership journey, reaffirming her dedication to the people of Murang’a and Kenya as a whole. Her achievements, coupled with her drive to learn and grow, position her as a promising leader ready to tackle the challenges of public service with resilience and integrity.
As Gachagua aptly put it, Nyutu embodies the spirit of servant leadership, making her a true daughter of the Mountain.
