The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued a formal apology to Dennis Basweti, a preacher who was erroneously identified as a participant in the violent protests that took place on Tuesday. Basweti, who was listed as a wanted person, was exonerated on Wednesday after voluntarily presenting himself at the Kenyenya DCI offices and providing a statement.
Basweti denied any involvement in the occupy parliament protests that occurred last week. He explained to the authorities that the widely circulated photo, which had implicated him, was actually taken on June 10, 2024. On that date, he had visited the parliament premises at the invitation of his Member of Parliament, Hon. Silvanus Osoro.
The DCI’s prompt apology comes as a relief to Basweti, who expressed his gratitude for being cleared of the false accusations. The directorate has acknowledged the error and the impact it had on Basweti’s reputation, assuring the public of their commitment to accurate and fair investigations.
The incident highlights the importance of thorough verification in law enforcement processes, especially in situations involving public allegations. The DCI’s willingness to correct their mistake and publicly apologize is a positive step towards maintaining trust and transparency within the community.
