The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has apprehended three notorious suspects linked to a series of violent robberies and murders that have terrorized residents of Gem Yala Sub-County. The suspects, identified as Albert Otieno, Farid Kimutai, and John Okumu, were arrested following weeks of intense pursuit by law enforcement officers.
The gang’s reign of terror began on January 3, 2025, at a timber yard and hardware store near Ulumbi Junction along the Kisumu-Busia highway. During the attack, the criminals brutally murdered 40-year-old watchman Jesse Kalasinga before fleeing with stolen hardware goods.
Their violent spree continued on January 20, 2025, when they targeted Nyang’oma Market. Under the cover of darkness, after vandalizing a transformer and plunging the market into a blackout, they attacked security personnel. Watchman Absalom Sande, 29, was killed in the incident, while another guard, Francis Nyambese, 42, was left with severe injuries. The gang then broke into a phone accessories shop, stealing a Dell laptop, three smartphones, and other valuables.
Less than ten days later, on January 29, 2025, the criminals struck again at Yala Market. Security guards Jesse Otieno, 35, and Edward Ochieng, 40, were fatally injured during the attack. The gang looted a shop, making away with assorted airtime scratch cards, smartphones, and various merchandise.
Following a relentless investigation by the DCI, detectives finally tracked down the three suspects, bringing their brutal crime spree to an end. The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in efforts to restore security in the region, which has been gripped by fear due to the gang’s violent activities.
The suspects are now in police custody and undergoing processing as they await their court appearance. Law enforcement officials have assured the public that they remain committed to ensuring justice for the victims and restoring safety in Gem Yala and its environs.
Authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to prevent further criminal incidents. The arrests serve as a warning to other criminal elements that law enforcement agencies are dedicated to apprehending those who threaten the safety of the community.
