Seoul woke up to a breathtaking sight this week as the heaviest November snowfall in over a century transformed the city into a winter wonderland. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) recorded an astonishing 16.1 centimeters (6.3 inches) of snow on Wednesday, breaking the previous record of 9.5 centimeters (3.7 inches) set in 1966. While residents reveled in the beauty of the snow, the rare event also brought significant challenges to daily life.
A Scene of Winter Magic
Snow-covered palaces, streets lined with frosty trees, and residents bundled in thick coats created a postcard-perfect landscape. Families and friends enjoyed snowball fights, built snowmen, and captured the magical moment in photos. Adding to the charm, Everland Zoo’s famous twin panda cubs experienced their first snowfall, delighting visitors as they frolicked in the white drifts.
The snow’s arrival coincided with cultural events, such as a kimchi-making festival at Jogyesa Temple, where participants braved the cold to carry on the centuries-old tradition of preparing kimchi for winter.
Disruptions Across the Capital
While picturesque, the snowfall caused widespread disruption. Hundreds of households near Seoul, including in Gwangju, lost power, and transportation was severely affected. More than 150 flights were delayed or canceled, over 100 ferry services were suspended, and icy roads led to closures in key areas. Public transportation was stretched thin, prompting authorities to deploy extra subway trains to manage rush hour crowds.
The weather also turned tragic, with at least three deaths under investigation as potentially linked to the storm. In Wonju, southeast of Seoul, a multi-car pileup on an icy highway underscored the snow’s hazardous side.
A Balancing Act
President Yoon Suk Yeol urged authorities to prioritize public safety and ensure smooth transit during the chaotic weather. “Thorough management” was his call to action, emphasizing preparedness as Seoul adjusted to the rare snowfall.
This record-breaking event left Seoulites with mixed emotions. While it brought joy and wonder, it also served as a reminder of nature’s unpredictable power. The city continues to navigate its snowy aftermath, blending resilience with moments of delight.
