A Denver accountant who describes himself as a “certified joy enthusiast” allegedly opened fire on two strangers in Washington Park, shooting one in the neck and jaw, after an argument over a park bench. The 28-year-old, who also identifies as a small business owner with a deep passion for teaching and preaching, is now facing attempted first-degree murder charges.
The incident took place on a Sunday afternoon when the suspect engaged in a verbal altercation with a man who had asked to sit on the same bench. Witnesses reported that the situation escalated quickly. The suspect was seen spitting on the victim, pushing him in the chest, and then delivering a punch to the lower back. As the victim, who was seated on his bicycle, attempted to leave, the suspect produced a firearm and fired at him. The bullet struck the rear tire of the bicycle, but the man managed to escape without injury.
Less than a minute later, the suspect approached another individual nearby and, without any prior confrontation, opened fire again. This time, the victim was struck in the neck and jaw, suffering serious injuries. The suspect then calmly walked to his red Hyundai sedan and fled the scene. Law enforcement officers later apprehended him using a high-risk stop and a PIT maneuver to disable his vehicle.
During police interviews, the suspect claimed he believed the victims were part of a psychological operation targeting him. He spoke at length about his fears of mind control and artificial intelligence, ideas he had previously discussed publicly. In a past podcast appearance, he had warned about AI being a tool of manipulation and control, even linking it to apocalyptic religious beliefs. He had argued that AI could conduct psychological warfare on individuals and that it played a role in what he called the “mark of the beast.”
The suspect’s paranoia appeared to have been longstanding. Records indicate that he had been placed on a mental health hold in May of the previous year, though the details surrounding that incident remain unclear. His online presence had also raised some red flags, as he frequently posted about his beliefs in government conspiracies and religious prophecies.
The first victim, though shaken, managed to escape physically unharmed thanks to the bullet hitting his bicycle tire instead of his body. The second victim, however, suffered significant injuries and was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the severity of the injuries, he survived.
Witnesses played a crucial role in identifying the suspect and providing key details about the shootings. Their statements confirmed that the attack on the second victim was entirely unprovoked, making the act even more disturbing.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine whether the suspect’s mental health history played a role in his actions. Prosecutors will likely consider whether his beliefs about AI, psychological operations, and religious extremism contributed to his decision to attack strangers. His case has also reignited discussions about mental health and gun access, particularly in relation to individuals with a history of psychiatric holds.
For now, the suspect remains in custody, facing serious charges that could result in significant prison time if convicted.
