Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged Kenyans to embrace and protect their cultures and traditions as a vital aspect of national unity and strength. Speaking on Saturday during a prayer service for the Maasai Ilkiramat Age Group in Kaputiei, Kajiado East Constituency, the Deputy President emphasized the importance of cultural preservation in fostering a united and resilient nation.
In his address, DP Gachagua highlighted the significance of Kenya’s diverse cultural heritage, noting that the richness of these traditions forms the backbone of the country’s identity. He underscored the need for all communities to take pride in their unique customs and beliefs, which he believes are essential in maintaining the fabric of the nation.
“We must always be proud of our cultures and beliefs because that is what defines us. I’m a big proponent of our cultures and the need to protect them to sustain the strength of our nation,” the Deputy President stated.
He commended the Maa community for their steadfast commitment to preserving their cultural heritage, which has garnered recognition both locally and globally. The Maasai, known for their distinctive customs and vibrant traditions, serve as a symbol of cultural pride in Kenya and beyond.
“The Maa community is now known worldwide for their unique culture and beliefs,” DP Gachagua remarked, acknowledging the community’s role in promoting Kenya’s cultural image on the global stage.
The Deputy President also took the opportunity to address the youth, particularly the members of the Ilkiramat Age Group, emphasizing their role as custodians of their community’s identity. He urged them to remain steadfast in upholding their traditions and to avoid the pitfalls of modern vices that could erode their cultural values.
“As an age group, you are the future of this community. Kindly take care of yourselves, your families, and your community. Avoid drugs and illicit drinks which are destructive to your health and lives,” he cautioned.
In his speech, Gachagua also stressed the importance of unity among Kenya’s diverse communities as a prerequisite for national development. He pointed out that the progress and advancement of the country could only be achieved through the collective effort and cooperation of all its people.
“It is encouraging to see the unity of the Maa community. For the unity of our nation, our communities must be united. Development of any community and the country will be quickly realized when we are united,” he emphasized.
Further, the Deputy President reiterated his support for President William Ruto’s initiative to foster national unity by including members of the opposition in the government. He praised the President’s efforts in building a government that transcends political divides, aimed at serving all Kenyans regardless of their political affiliations.
“We support the President’s call for the nation’s unity. All those who were in Azimio are now working with us. We are happy to work with everyone as guided by the President. Right now, we are focused on developing the country and serving Kenyans,” DP Gachagua affirmed.
In addition to his calls for cultural preservation and national unity, Gachagua also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to combat the menace of drugs and illicit brews. He assured the public that stringent measures have been put in place to curb the production, distribution, and sale of these harmful substances, which have been a major concern across the country.
“We have taken stern measures to stop the production and sale of the drinks. We are not relenting. I’m appealing to the young people to avoid these drinks at all costs,” he concluded.
The Deputy President’s remarks come at a time when the government is intensifying its efforts to address social challenges, promote cultural heritage, and strengthen national cohesion, all aimed at fostering a more prosperous and united Kenya.
