The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has partnered with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to embed ethics and integrity into the country’s education curriculum. The partnership, which was formalized during a strategic meeting between EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud and KICD Director Prof. Charles Ochieng’ Ong’ondo, seeks to address the growing concerns of unethical behavior and corruption in Kenya by focusing on the formative years of the youth.
EACC’s Chief Executive Officer, Abdi Mohamud, emphasized the significance of instilling values early in life, noting that youth development is crucial to shaping a society grounded in integrity. “This initiative is part of the Commission’s broader commitment to combat corruption and unethical conduct by targeting the formative years of youth development. The early instillation of values profoundly shapes character,” said Mohamud.
The partnership recognizes that ethical education can play a transformative role in shaping the future of Kenya’s youth. By integrating ethics into the curriculum, students will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and moral compass to navigate contemporary challenges, such as the pervasive issue of corruption that has plagued the nation for decades. Both agencies believe that teaching values such as honesty, accountability, and transparency will enable students to resist the temptations of unethical behavior as they mature.
Prof. Ong’ondo echoed Mohamud’s sentiments, stressing the importance of a value-based education system in addressing moral decay in society. “By embedding ethics and integrity into the curriculum, we are not just teaching students about right and wrong but preparing them to become responsible citizens who will lead Kenya toward a future of ethical leadership,” he said.
As part of their collaboration, EACC and KICD will also explore various initiatives, including conducting studies on the state of ethics education in schools and developing innovative strategies for curriculum improvement. The goal is to create a comprehensive educational framework that fosters a generation of young people who prioritize ethical behavior in both personal and professional spheres.
The partnership marks a critical step in Kenya’s ongoing efforts to tackle corruption at its roots. With this initiative, both organizations are hopeful that the values instilled in students will extend beyond the classroom, positively influencing society and building a culture of integrity that will endure for generations to come.
