Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos has praised the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) for its transformative role in identifying and nurturing sports talent in Kenyan schools. Speaking during the National Secondary School Term One Games in Mombasa, Migos described the CBC as a strategic game changer that integrates sports into the core of the education system.
“We’re not just building scholars we’re building champions. The CBC has a Sports Pathway built right into it, and that means sports is no longer an afterthought. It’s a core part of education,” said Migos.
The CS highlighted the importance of offering equal opportunities for students to pursue their passions, whether in sports, arts, or academics. He believes the CBC structure allows learners to explore and excel in their areas of strength, leading to holistic development.
While commending the high standards of competition witnessed during the Term One Games, Migos made a passionate appeal to corporate entities to support school sports. He acknowledged Brookside Dairy for sponsoring the games but called for broader corporate involvement as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
“We salute Brookside for backing the Term One games, but we need more brands to step up and sponsor school sports as part of their CSR. It’s time to invest in the future of our youth who are our next stars,” he urged.
The CS also praised the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) for its efficient organization of the games and encouraged fair play and adherence to eligibility rules by participating schools.
Migos was particularly impressed by the adoption of Olympic-style sports formats in the ongoing competitions. He said the format would play a crucial role in shaping young athletes into future global champions, as it provides a structured platform for early talent identification.
“This is the first time we’re running the games in Olympic fashion. It allows us to spot and nurture talent early and that’s how we build future champions for Kenya,” he noted.
The Term One Games, which began on Tuesday, feature basketball, hockey, cross-country, handball, and athletics, with champions set to be crowned on Saturday.
