The Ministry of Education and union representatives have reached an agreement to resolve the ongoing strike by Technical University of Kenya (TUK) workers, which has lasted for three weeks. The industrial action was triggered by demands for the implementation of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which workers insist has been long overdue.
The prolonged strike significantly disrupted learning, prompting students to hold demonstrations last week in protest. Their concerns about the ongoing disruption eventually led to the indefinite closure of the university, further escalating tensions. The impasse pushed the government to intervene, with Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba spearheading negotiations aimed at finding a lasting solution.
Speaking after a boardroom meeting with union officials at the ministry headquarters, CS Ogamba announced that a sustainable agreement framework had been established. This framework includes a structured return-to-work formula that will ensure a smooth resumption of academic activities at TUK.
Ogamba outlined key areas discussed during the negotiations, including measures to increase student enrollment, enhance the university’s organizational structure, and strengthen overall university operations. He emphasized that these improvements would not only address workers’ grievances but also contribute to the long-term development of the institution.
The Ministry of Education has presented a proposal to the unions, outlining both short-term and long-term solutions to address the concerns of TUK workers. While the details of the proposal were not immediately disclosed, sources indicate that it includes phased implementation of salary adjustments and improved working conditions as outlined in the CBA.
To prevent future industrial actions, Ogamba reiterated the government’s commitment to proactive engagement with university staff across all institutions. He noted that the ministry is developing policies to enhance labor relations within public universities, ensuring that grievances are addressed before they escalate into strikes.
The agreement between the ministry and unions brings relief to students and staff at TUK, who can now anticipate a return to normalcy. However, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the government’s implementation of the agreed terms to ensure that commitments made during the discussions are honored.
