The leadership of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) from the Nyanza region convened for a crucial meeting with Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo in Kisumu on Sunday. The discussions focused on key issues affecting education, governance, and leadership development.
The engagement brought together KNUT representatives from all 21 branches in the region, providing a platform to deliberate on strategies for strengthening the education sector and fostering collaboration between teachers and the government.
PS Omollo underscored the role of teachers beyond their traditional classroom duties, urging them to enhance their governance, management, and public service capacities. He emphasized that teachers play a vital role in shaping the nation’s leadership and should actively engage in decision-making processes.
“The leadership within this room is the foundation of tomorrow’s governance. From this team, we will see future members of Parliament, senators, governors, and other key decision-makers,” Omollo stated.
The discussions highlighted achievements in education under President William Ruto’s administration, particularly the recruitment of 76,000 teachers over the past two years. Omollo acknowledged the challenges that persist, especially in urban areas like Nairobi, where infrastructure struggles to keep up with the growing student population. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to affirmative action in underserved regions to address such disparities.
Additionally, the PS commended teachers for their dedication, recognizing their contribution to improved academic performance and a smooth transition to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). He assured the KNUT leadership that the government remains committed to their welfare and urged them to take advantage of government programs that promote capacity-building and community development.
The meeting emphasized the importance of continuous dialogue between education stakeholders and the government to address emerging challenges, drive sustainable reforms, and position teachers as key players in national development.
Also present at the meeting were Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo, North Kanyamkago Ward MCA George Omamba, Lake Basin Development Authority MD Wycliff Ochiaga, Private Security Regulation Authority official Phillip Okello, and various KNUT executive secretaries from the Nyanza region.
