The Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Inuka Scholarship Programme is making a significant impact in the lives of bright students with disabilities, offering them the support they need to pursue their dreams. This initiative is not only about providing financial aid but also fostering resilience, mentorship, and career development for the beneficiaries.
One of the program’s success stories is Caroline Mwangi, a 21-year-old law student at the University of Nairobi. Born with albinism, Mwangi faced numerous challenges growing up in a society that struggled with acceptance of people with disabilities. Despite these obstacles and a family tragedy in 2019 that almost derailed her education, Mwangi rose above adversity, scoring an impressive A- in her final high school exams. Her journey was made possible, in part, by the KPC Foundation, which supported her through high school and continues to guide her as she nears the completion of her law degree.
Mwangi’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship and opportunity. The KPC Inuka Scholarship Programme, which started with the goal of supporting students with disabilities, has now helped 45 students from across Kenya. These students, many of whom faced significant socio-economic and educational barriers, are now on their way to achieving their career goals, with 47% of the scholarship recipients from the previous year achieving university entry grades.
The scholarship covers not only tuition fees but also uniforms and essential school supplies. Additionally, KPC introduced an annual mentorship program to provide guidance on life skills and career preparation, ensuring that these young individuals are equipped to succeed both academically and in life.
The stories of students like Levy Kabesa, a visually impaired student from Nyamira County, highlight the transformative power of the KPC Inuka Scholarship Programme. For students who once faced uncertain futures, this support has opened doors to higher education and brighter opportunities, proving that with the right support, resilience can turn dreams into reality
